ROAD BIKE EXPERT SINCE 1980

  • FOUNDING – 1980 Two years after ending his professional career, Merckx decided to manufacture steel racing bikes himself. He apprenticed under Ugo De Rosa, a former Italian professional cyclist who had built Merckx's bikes for many years. Ugo passed his knowledge to Eddy and helped train the first Merckx employees. These initial employees were mostly Eddy's former teammates. The early frames produced in his factory—a converted old farmhouse in Meise—were primarily made of steel. Later, aluminum, titanium, and carbon bikes were added to the lineup.
  • EARLY SUCCESSES Eddy Merckx Cycles immediately became the bike supplier for Marc-IWC-VRD. Jos De Schoenmaecker and Ludo Loos each won a stage of the Tour de France just a few months after the team's founding, riding blue Eddy Merckx bikes.
  • PANASONIC – 1986-87 Eddy Planckaert achieved an impressive stage victory at the 1986 Tour on a blue-and-white Merckx. Eric Vanderaerden secured the green jersey and followed up the next year with a victory at Paris-Roubaix.
  • TOUR OF FLANDERS + GREEN JERSEY – 1988 The ADR - Mini Flat - MOV team also chose Eddy Merckx bikes, leading to great success: Eddy Planckaert won the Tour of Flanders and secured the green jersey at the Tour de France. Over the years, many teams continued to rely on Eddy Merckx Cycles as their supplier. America was also convinced, thanks to the 7-Eleven team.
  • RAINBOW JERSEY – 1993 Lance Armstrong became World Champion in Oslo on an Eddy Merckx bike, wearing the characteristic blue-white-red Merckx rainbow jersey for a year.
  • VLAANDEREN 2002 - EDDY MERCKX – 1994 The founding of the Vlaanderen 2002-Eddy Merckx team also marked the beginning of their partnership with Eddy Merckx Cycles. The two parties have continued to collaborate for three decades, launching numerous Flemish talents. In 2024, they remain a successful duo under the name Team Flanders-Baloise.
  • SCANDIUM BIKE – 2003 Peter Van Petegem won the Tour of Flanders on an Eddy Merckx bike. His bike was made of scandium, a metal also used in the aerospace industry. Scandium is as strong as aluminum but lighter. His bike referenced this with the chemical symbol "Sc." The bike later appeared in various exhibitions. Van Petegem went on to win Paris-Roubaix just a week later.
  • 30th ANNIVERSARY – 2010-11 Tom Boonen and his Quickstep-Innergetic teammates also utilized Eddy Merckx Cycles. The 2010 Tour was particularly special. Just after the great patron’s 65th birthday, Sylvain Chavanel rode through Meise—where the factory opened exactly 30 years prior—wearing the yellow jersey on a yellow bike. Specifically for the Tour, the EMX-7 was launched, the brand's most modern and advanced racing bike to date.
  • NEW OWNERS – 2017 The Belgian company Belgian Cycling Factory, the powerhouse behind Ridley and Forza, became the owner of Eddy Merckx bikes. This ensured that Eddy Merckx bikes remained in Belgian hands. They are developed and manufactured in Beringen.
  • RETURN TO THE WORLDTOUR PELOTON – 2019 Fifty years after Merckx's first Tour victory, the Tour de France started in Brussels. With team AG2R, a WorldTour team appeared in the professional peloton on Eddy Merckx bikes once again. They used, among others, the aerodynamic Eddy Merckx 525 and the versatile Stockeu69.
  • RETURN AFTER THE PANDEMIC – 2024 Following the coronavirus pandemic, the Merckx range continues to evolve. Gravel bikes and all-road bikes in carbon, aluminum, and/or steel have been added to the collection. Furthermore, the Corsa line—consisting of handcrafted steel and titanium bikes—continues to expand.
